On the night
of June 03 - 1947, a male child, radiant like a Jyothi, was born to Sri Narasimha
Iyer and Smt Logambal in the famous temple town of Madurai in Tamil Nadu. People
were wonder - struck to note, in the sky the stars in the formation of flower
clusters. Peacocks were seen to be happily dancing in the garden around.
Next morning, at sun - rise, a big black serpent circumambulated the child thrice
and coolly moved away. Elders thought that the child was divine-born and had
the Blessings of the lord of serpents and accordingly named the child 'NAGARAJ'.
They all, felt, the child was really an Avatar of Lord Sankaranarayana, their
family deity, and they reared the child with utmost care and affection.
Even in the earlly days, there were several incidents which clearly proved the
divinity in him :
He wad educated in V. O. C. Higher Secondary School, Kovilpatti and St.John's
Higher Secondary School, and St.John's College, Palayamkottai. He was an International
Hockey Player, He was famous Voilnest, and Vocalists, and Fine Arts like directed
several Dramas at School and in College.
Bascially a Post-Graduate
in Statistics, he obtained several other diplomas in Professional subjects.
He passed the written test for the Indian Railways Service. He was for a time
Lecturer in a College in Sivakasi and then joined the Railways as Personnel
Officer at Guntakal.
Initiation
to Sanyasa :
While on a visit to Delhi for a Railway Board interview, he met His Holiness
Sri Satchithananda Saraswathi Swamigal, the 32nd Pontiff of Sri Vidya Peetam
(Rishikesh) in an Ashram set up in beautiful natural environments on the banks
of the river Godavari at Nasik. There was instant rapport between him and the
Swamiji. The beauty of the natural set - up of the Ashram and the remarkable
simplicity of the Swamiji immediately attracted Nagraj.
Accordingly, on the appointed auspicious Panguni Uthiram day of April 09, 1971,
the Guru initiated him into Sanyasa under the Deeksha name of 'SRI RAMAKRISHNANANDA
SARASWATHI', took him as his disciple and installed him as the 33rd PEETADHIPATHI
of SRI VIDYA PEETAM. And placing His hand on the disciple's head (Sparsa Deeksha),
the Guru passed on His Spiritual Powers and Knowledge to the disciple.
Being himself one of the foremost exponents of and an Acharya par excellence
in Sri Vidya the Guru initiated the disciple also into the nuances of Sri Vidya
also known as Brahma Vidya and Moksha Vidya, Vakvadhini Mantra Bhijakshara was
also duly inscribed on the Sishya's tongue and this gave the young Sanyasi the
ability to understand, comprehend and effortlessly pour out his thoughts in
poems, hymns, songs etc., like water gushing out through the open flood - gates
of a Dam.
Mastering
in Atharva Veda :
The Guru ordered
the disciple to go to Dwaraka and Ujjain and master the Atharva Veda Mantra
Sastra and then to the South and spread the Atharva Veda and Advaita Philosophy
there. On the third day, the Guru attained Videha Mukthi. After the ceremonies,
Sri Sri Sri Ramakrishnananda Saraswathi Swamigal Started on his mission as instructed
by the Guru. As already stated, Adi Sankara installed Sri Toakacharya in Jyothir
Mutt with insturctions to propagate and spread the Atharva Veda. There is no
Sastra or Scientific discipline that is not contained in the Atharva Veda. The
efficacy of the mantras there in is so much so quick and so sure that they can
do or undo, make or break. So Sri Todaka felt that these mantras could very
well be misused if only they got into the hands of bad and greedy elements.
He therefore divided the Atharva Veda in to two parts, the Brahmana Bhaga and
the Mantra Bhaga, gave the Brahmana Bhaga to his disciple and successor in the
mutt and preached the Mantra Bhaga into the ears of a Cow. The Cow walked on
to the house of one grahasta by name Sri Somadev and began to recite the Atharva
Veda Mantras preached to her by Sri Todaka and signalled Sri Somadev to follow
her. Sri Somadev accordingly followed the Cow and came to the Ashram or Sri
Todakacharya. Sri Todakacharya blessed Somadev, instructed that the mantras
he had heard as recited by the Cow should be passed on from one person to another
by inscription of the tongue and also prescribed certain severe tests to be
made in the process. It was also prescribed that once it is passed on to a disciple,
the Guru shall die on the eleventh day. Thus passed the Atharva Veda Mantra
Bhaga from one grahasta to another and lastly to Sri Vasudeva Bhat in Ujjain.
Sri Ramakrishnananda Saraswathi Swamigal met Sri Vasudeva Bhatt in Ujjain and
conveyed to him his Guru's wishes that the Atharva Veda Mantra Sastra should
be imparted to him. Sri Vasudeva Bhat readily agreed. After successfully passing
through all the rigorous tests imposed by the master Sri Swamigal duly received
the upadesa. And for the first time in history after Todakacharya, the Atharva
Veda Mantra Sastra came back to be possessed by another Sanyasi. Our Holiness
(thus) combines in Him the knowledge of both Sri Vidya and Atharva Veda Mantra
Sastra .
Divine Experiences :
Attain of Sarvangya Peetam:
The Swamiji ascended the Sarvangya Peetam at Banaras twice( in 1975 & 1979 )
after giving in one simple reply, answers to all the various questions simultaneously
asked by eminent scholars and Vedic Pandits like mahamahopadyaya Rajeswara sastrigal,
Brahmasri Ariyoor Subramaniia Ganapadigal and others in the four Vedas ,Six
sastras, Two Ithihasas, eighteen Puranas and other disciplines like Music, Dance
and Astronomy. After hectic tours from town to town ,village to village all
over the country for almost a decade ,He established the present Headquarters
of the Sri vidya Peetam ( Rishikesh) in its present premises at 5/13 Station
Border Road, Chromepet, Chennai on 18 - 01- 1981.
His Pujas
and Lecturers are to be seen , heard and enjoyed. His clarity of thoughts and
expression is simply astonishing and astounding . The rippling and flowing grace
of His Masterity exposition of the Vedic doctrines and principles ,together
with the scientific annotations thereof, is truly reminiscent of the great traditions
of classical exponents of yore. The Swamiji has done extensive research and
has identified that so much of contemporary scientific knowledge and literature
even more is already found in the Vedas. He has paricularly been pointing out
the scientific base of the various Yagnas and Homas and explaining how they
are not repugnant to but , infact totally in tune with reason and science. His
Holiness is a poet of surpassing excellence who could contemplate and describe
the attributes of every manifestations of the supreme. His daily Pujas will
be different and varying with new prayers , Mantras ,slokas and Vedic salutations
pouring out in ecstasy like the downpour of as tormy winter rain. For sweetness
and elegance of diction , calriy and invincibility of reasoning and subtletly
of thought ,
His Holiness can hardly be rivalled , much less surpassed.
The Swamiji 's phenomenal erudition and deep understanding of the nuanceas of the Vedic, especially Atharva veda mantra sastra and prayogas stand him in good stead.
